2017 was a return to form for the Hunter Valley. The White Label range hit the upper echelons of the Margan range. Fermented in 500 litre French puncheons with natural yeasts.
Margan, White Label, Chardonnay, Hunter Valley, 2017
Nutty and figgy, this gives off solid, firm yet aloof aromas. Hits of burnt butter and grilled nectarine and sea spray. This is a meaty, full thing. Serious and full, this tips into “old school” chardonnay territory. The lees work plumbs depths and presents a dry, savoury expression with lingering bittersweet citrus and stonefruit. Long tail of minerality and acidity. Can’t argue the quality wine making, but it seems to dominate over the fruit for the moment. Maybe a little bit of time and this nugget will shake free the earth.
