Straight Cab Francs are rare as hen’s teeth in Australia as it is usually used for blending with other “Bordeaux” varietals. Straight Cabernet Francs made from mature vines are like false hen’s teeth…even rarer. But these vines are 32 years old and just starting to hit their stride. Rhonda and Stephen Doyle were some of the first to recognise Orange’s potential for growing quality grapes and planted their first grapes in 1983: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and of course Cabernet Franc. Orange is, as we all now know, a truly wonderful wine destination and we have the Doyles to thank for this.
Their cellar door is by appointment only, and far be it like that to not welcome visitors…it ensures that they can give you their undivided attention. Definitely a must visit when in Orange.
Bloodwood Cabernet Franc, Orange, 2014
Deep, bruise puple and almost opaque in the glass. Dusty meaty violets, blackberries and garam spice. Asphalt and thick rubber all topped with a sweet charry oak note.
Firm, drying and plentiful tannins with blackberry fruit, and an almost mandarin-like citrus finish. Sweet bourbon tinged oak provides plenty of oomph. There’s a touch of rusticity about the wine, but that’s certainly part of its charm
The minimalist label belies the power. Going to live for quite a while.
RRP: $30
