Sourced from the Hilltops region of NSW near the township of Young. There’s some great fruit coming from vineyards out that way.

Calabria Wines, Cool Climate Series, Tempranillo, Hilltops, 2014

Tempranillo has its spiritual home in Spain, where it is an integral part of the wines of Rioja. Smells of little dark berries and deep cherry, overlaid with sweetish cocoa spice. Quite plush up front: Sour cherry and dark plum. Long powdery tannins, with that drying powdered cocoa-like finish. There’s a touch of heat from the alcohol, but this also helps the fullness of the mouth feel. Finishes clean. A little simple, no great length but a good introduction to an “alternative style” to convert new drinkers.
