The accompanying media release, tongue only partially in cheek, asks the question: “What if we told you we had a new variety called Ohledrev?” The Willson sisters are pretty keen on the grape and see its potential to replace other “crisp dry white.” Introducing it by any other name, making it appear newer than it actually is just may see the popularity soar. Jay Tulloch in the Hunter Valley has known about Verdelho’s potential for years.
Bremerton Mollie & Merle Verdelho, Langhorne Creek, 2015
Next to no skin contact to keep it fresh as a daisy, indeed, a little stinky cabbage reduction and some potent egg shell notes. Green melon, feijoa tropical fruit along with sherbert. Simple sour citrus, green pears and white flowers with a powdery mouth feel, capped off with melon flesh sweet lilt. Acidity is green apple slice firm and doesn’t reach shrill-factor. Has consistency year to year, vintage to vintage. Summertime wine.
RRP: $17
Alc: 13%
