The only single vineyard release for 2016 Wynnsday amongst the 6 wines. The Harold vineyard ripened “evenly and early” with 15 months in a combination of 16% new & 84% used (1-4 year old) French oak. The Harold was the first of Wynn’s single vineyard wines, the 2001 being released in 2004.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Harold Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, 2013
Earthy tones of sodden tobacco, brooding olive, light soy (there’s a difference) with some youthful purple fruit lift. The palate defies this earthy quality with a flash of boysenberry and dark “fruits of the forest,” before coming to rest with gravelly tannins that rumble like little rocks. Some green spearmint and pepper provide a spicy counterpoint that is most welcome. Feels quite effortless, and in a way assures you, like a portrait of a smiling benevolent king. A more than worthy cameo in the Wynnsday release.
