One of the 6 wines that makes up the ‘Wynnsday” releases, available commercially on the first Wednesday in August. This is a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon 72% and 28% Shiraz, and obviously 100% Coonawarra fruit from the V&A (Victoria & Albert) Lane.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, V&A Lane, Cabernet/Shiraz, Coonawarra 2014
Moist, dense choc cake smells with earthy beetroot and plum. Blackcurrant, clay, chalk, fallen eucalypt bark and sweet braising master stock beef before lifting with a pretty flourish of sweet flowers. According to Allen Jenkins: “Vintage 2014 was ‘classic’ Coonawarra, with lower yields and good quality arising from the long cool ripening post veraison; the resulting wines are finely structured and medium bodied.” This certainly shows here. Medium bodied with elegant tannins. Darkly fruited with the right judgement of oak. The expectation of salty black Cabernet fruit is tempered well with the sweeter Shiraz. Sits back and doesn’t try and push too hard. Will age well in the medium term.
