And yet again, dear reader we find ourselves with another riesling that underlines the point that the variety is undervalued in Australia. Aged? Yes. Quality? Indeed. Under $50? Plenty of change. This feels almost criminal.
Mitchell Wines, McNicol Riesling, Clare Valley 2009
Rich and full. Initially with mature Riesling “kerosene” but time and warmth sees this impostor away to unmask lime tart, biscuit crust, citrus blossom and even a tropical fruit core with slight ginger beer refreshment. The palate bordering full with powerful, yet ethereal lime zest, white rocks and baked lime tart characters. The acids still tingle and jangle. This truly is like a hug from an old friend that sparkles with the potential of many moons ahead. Exceptional.
