Katnook Estate are one of the mainstays of iconic Coonawarra wineries. Spent 13 months in 50% French oak (10% new) and 50% older American oak barriques. The label maintains a relevance even with somewhat “classical” styling.
Katnook Estate, Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, 2013
Intense and pure blackcurrant with a definite creamy lilt thanks to the American oak. Some stony, savoury black olive counters cassis syrup with a tomato sugo/pizza base sauce freshness. Solid black fruit wall underpinned by layers of gravelly tannins. It’s a bit of work to get through for the moment. If intending on opening in the next 2 or 3 years, give it a decant, otherwise this will cellar well for many years to come.
