Huntington Estate Special Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Bravo to wineries such as Huntington Estate to hold back releases to showcase what semi-mature prospects they can be. 18 months in French oak barriques (40% new). The bottle image label shows 2012 vintage, but nothing save that year has changed.

Huntington Estate, Special Reserve, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mudgee, 2013

All dark and earthy: fresh turned soil with boot polish over blackberry, cassis and raspberry. Bitter dark choc and coffee aromas provide a savoury foil with old mint tea. Rusticity continues on the palate with plentiful chewy, fine tannins supporting cherry and blackberry fruit. Feels comforting and reliable for those that like a bolder style that shows restraint by not bombing away with fruit. Good for now or the next 15 years.
