The only white among the new releases from Canobolas Wines. Jonathon Mattick knows his way around some of the finest Chardonnays in the land after working at Handpicked Wines on the Mornington Peninsula before buying the (former) Canobolas Smith vineyard in Orange in early 2022. No surprises at the quality of this release.
Natural ferment. Partial malolactic fermentation (20%). 11 months maturation in oak (33% new) and 4 months extra in stainless steel (on lees).
Canobolas Wines, Chardonnay, Orange, 2022

Pale straw colour. Gunflint, hints of nougat, straw, samphire and saline, butter wrapper, lemon curd, white stone fruit and a little of the hewn oak. Firm and muscular with persistence. Fine interplay between texture and fruit. Flavour echoes of varietal white stone fruit, grapefruit and lemon citrus with a touch of spice from the oak. Long, focused tail that carries for an age. A seriously impressive first release.

Seems like it’s a definite handbrake turn from the original Canobolas Smith style. I’ve been really impressed by a couple of 22 Orange Chardonnays recently. The 22 Brangayne Isolde and also the amazing 22 Ross Hill Pinnacle easily come to mind.
Jon Mattick is definitely making Canobolas in his own style. Going to be a gem for the region as he finds his groove.
