Mumm Central Otago Pinot Noir 2021

The second release of Champagne House G.H. Mumm’s “Terroir Collection” from Central Otago (along with 2023’s very fine Blanc de Noirs).  Made by local Central Otago Pernod Ricard winemaker Jamie Marfell. Marfell advises: “We’ve long worked alongside grape growers in the sub-regions to recognise the best vineyard and sites and the 2021 vintage provided us with excellent conditions and fruit to produce this wine. Creating a fine wine rather than a sparkling wine, speaks to the pioneering and innovative nature of this collection which is dedicated to showcasing Pinot Noir at its pinnacle of quality in the bottle.”

From a winemaking perspective, 100% hand-harvested fruit from the Lowburn sub-region and 16 months maturation in French oak. Attractively packaged. Available in Australia from selected retailers and direct at vntnr.co

Mumm, Pinot Noir, Central Otago, 2021

Deep garnet, with a pigeon eye rim. Black cherry, blackberry, woody undergrowth, clotted cream, baked orange, walnut flesh, vanilla tinges from oak and sweet baking spices. Muscular flow with sharp spice (cedar and kitchen) and oomph. Tannins are fine, giving a decent structure to the plentiful dark cherry and berry flesh. There’s some full elegance, but the finish feels a little blunt. Quality for sure, it’s one for those that like their PN’s in the bigger spectrum.

RRP: $80 (AUD)
Alc: 14.5%
