Nautilus Estate in Marlborough is part of Hill Smith Family Estates and winemaker is Clive Jones. Proving that Marlborough does more than Sauv Blanc. A blend of Pinot Noir clones 114, 115, 5, 667 and 777, with around 20% whole bunch in the ferment. Pressed off to new and older French oak Barriques (25% new) for almost 12 months.
Nautilus, Southern Valleys, Pinot Noir, Marlborough, 2020
Sand and savoury spice, with malt biscuit, gun flint, dark cherry, rose petal, choc buttons, dried leaf, singed orange rind and bramble, before evoking a smoky autumnal evening. A little stalky and angular, before plenty of sour cherry flesh and well judged oak-work. There’s a fineness and steely tone through the tail, littered with fine tannin and good vibrancy.
