Congratulations to Calabria Family Wines who have just celebrated their 80th Anniversary. Unfortunately I was unable to join their party, so the family curated a 4 pack of their wines to send through, including this homage to the legacy of Calabria’s founder, Elisabetta Calabria. Open ferment, 10 days on skins before 12 months in 25% American and 75% French oak.
Calabria Family Wines, Elisabetta, Shiraz, Barossa Valley, 2024
Deep bruise purple and inky. Calm Barossa signature nose, not shouting but giving a sense of history and gravitas. Plum and dark chocolate to the fore, with clove and baking spice, baked cherry tart, and with savoury elements of olive tapenade and volcanic rock. Fleshy mulberry, delivered via a silky palate and with fine tannin woven well throughout. Remains neatly structured with an anise flourish through a balanced tail.
RRP: $50
Alc: 14%
Rating: 92/100
