“We are the Threeeeeeeeeeeeeee…Amigos!” So sang Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Martin Short in the 1980’s goofy comedy. In this case however, we see the 3 Amigos being Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro. 20% wild fermentation component of the Shiraz and big French oak cask maturation.
McHenry Hohnen, Amigos Red, Magaret River, 2012
Much better than the dull 2011. This is a touch meaty and funky with plethora of tart red/dark fruit playing a perfect cushioning role. Shiraz brings plenty of white pepper over a slight pruney/dried fruit element over jubey Grenache. Nicely structured, plush and plump and making for good times. Acidity still gives it some cut and thrust for a 2012 vintage. All the cellaring work has been done. Quaffable.
