Interesting that Mitchell Wines sent me this wine to look at again after I tasted it several months ago I had it on the bench with some other Mitchell wines and immediately thought I had seen the 2011 so went on to complete the note. I don’t mind having a 2nd review and also an updated technical component regarding the oak treatment (there isn’t any according to the Mitchell website).
Mitchell Wines, Mataro/Grenache, Clare Valley, 2012
Dense garnet in the glass. Meaty, dried beef, savoury aromas with a nettle edge, blueberry, blackberry and clove spice. Plenty of deep flavours: blueberry and plums before fuzzy tannins and a medium amount of acidity. This unwooded, yet slightly rustic example retains excellent balance and primary fruit qualities far belying its age. Plenty of time to go.
RRP: $22
Alc: 14.8%
