Need a symbol that sums up the whole package? The Eye of Horus stares out from the label of this wine and is known as the Egyptian symbol of “protection, royal power and good health.” Made from vines between 50 to 130 years old in the Ebenezer region of the Barossa. 2022 had some challenges with frost and late hail. Winemaking sees fermentation in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters before maturation for 16 months in 100% new oak (95% French and 5% American). Bottled unfiltered and under cork. Serious packaging for a serious wine.
Amon-Ra, Shiraz, Barossa Valley, 2022
Garnet and nearly opaque. Rich and full, nearing opulence. Bold sweet oak shroud unveils to a complex profile. Sweet black and purple fruit: mulberry smears and plum sauce. Incense, fruit cake, cracked peppercorns, nori sheets, Belgian chocolate and gun flint. Broad and flowing. The oak spiced and sweet over a tart and intense fruit profile. The balance to this power is a savoury and umami core that runs long. The tannins rumble and grip, not ready to let go through a long, long tail. Powerfully wrapped and structured for decades.
