Made by the exuberant Cynthea Semmens of Marion’s Vineyard, Tamar Valley in Tasmania’s north. The packaging quirky, bright and a play on the rosella-esque labels of old Tassie apple crates, even down to the “Fancy Tasmanian Wine” mimicking the original “Fancy Tasmanian Apples.”
A ‘bench’ blend accord to Cynthea, she dared me to guess the varieties that comprise the truly eponymous Red Delicious…So here’s a crack:
There’s Pinot Noir at its core. Perhaps a dusting of cabernet for some fine food friendly tannin. Merlot for plumpness; then a peppery spice…shiraz? Purple notes suggesting something bright! Fire burn and cauldron bubble indeed!
Even though the vintage is 09, the wine retains a youthful demeanour with an ease of drinking and at $20 is an absolute steal.
Carve me another slice of that Red Delicious!
