Gold medal winner at the 2017 Orange Wine Show and NSW Wine Awards. Whilst it isn’t quite from Piedmont, the cool nights of the Orange region make for a regional acid profile that suits the variety. Please note, Angullong have just changed over to the 2017 at their cellar door and online, but the 2016 is still available from retail outlets.
Angullong, Fossil Hill, Barbera, Orange, 2016
Opens evocatively with coffee, toffee oak before raspberry and stemmy cherry. Savoury elements are represented with earthy red brick/clay, tangy herbs and tobacco. Lively cherry fruit with supple, fine tannins and some southern hemisphere generosity from oak and the alcohol, but varietal with spice and lingering dried herbs. Excellent with a Sunday night simple tomato based pasta with olives and Italian sausage.
