The Cigar: thus named to describe the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil of the Coonawarra. This release cleaned up at many shows. Original winemaker Nat Cleghorn has since moved on from Yalumba but she should be proud of this one.
Yalumba, The Cigar, Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra, 2019

Deep garnet. Undeniably Coonawarra with cassis and mint hints, but with rose heart, cigar tip, boysenberry ice cream and an incredible sense of completeness. Nothing jumps or shouts from the nose. It is a sum of all parts. Bright and complete from start to finish. Power without being forceful, graceful without being delicate or fragile. Oak seasons without overshadowing and Cabernet’s infamous “doughnut hole” is somehow filled with supple dark fruit. The tail is long with fine, elegant tannins that just scream drink me. All praise deserved, a fantastic expression of modern Coonawarra.
