From from the Limestone Coast region of Mount Gambier and from Heywood in South Western Victoria (only designated as Victoria), just over the state border. Xavier Goodridge (born from central Victoria and spent several years at cult Harcourt winery Bress) gives his name to this eponymous winery: Xavier. Pa Pa wines are Xavier’s entry level. 100% destemmed (berries only) and then fermented in stainless steel for 2-3 weeks to keep things bright. Pressed and matured in a mixture of stainless steel and old barrels for around 5 months.
Xavier Wine, Pa Pa, Pinot Noir, Mount Gambier, Heywood, 2024
Medium Garnet in hue. A floral mix with hibiscus and rose petals, before some maraschino cherry, dried cranberries, cinnamon toast, ‘parmesan’ rind, turned brown earth and warm steel. Steps light and juicy through a soft and round approach that flows smoothly. There’s a little fruit tannin for some grip and a sharpness of cool climate acidity, but ultimately it’s a just a neat, easy to enjoy drink (and holds its ‘pinosity’).
