Anaperenna by Ben Glaetzer Shiraz Cabernet 2022

Ben Glaetzer gives context to the naming: “Anaperenna has been inspired by Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of the New Year. Anna Perenna symbolises the year’s cycle and her name translates as ‘enduring year.
2022 had some challenges in the Barossa with hail and frost, resulting in a smaller crop but showing great potential. This year sees a blend of 82% Shiraz and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaking stays the same, fermented in small (1 and 2 tonne) open fermenters and hand plunged three times a day. Maturation is 16 months in 100% new oak (92% French, 8% American). Bottled unfiltered and under cork.

Deep bruise purple. Choc mint opening with cigar ash, rose and hibiscus florals, blood plum, white pepper, cassis, licorice, tomato leaf and sweet oak. Full, brooding and dark. The century old vineyard Shiraz fruit from Ebeneezer showing the expected mature concentration. Weaves and flows through blackberry and plum fruit, mocha and malt. Tannins are thrown late, with a drying mesh that covers all through a long finish, smacking of licorice and spice. There’s a weight and heft, yet all handled handsomely with a good future ahead of it.
