From the ancient soils of Wrattonbully (just north of Coonawarra), the Smith & Hooper wines are produced from the family owned Hill-Smith Family Estates stable. Again, no change in RRP from the previous vintage (madness!) Winemaker is Heather Fraser.
Smith & Hooper, Merlot, Wrattonbully, 2023
lums, fresh mint, baked clove studs in ham, black fruits of the forest jam, gun flint, sun dried tomato paste, cedar, Hershey’s Kisses ™and a little terrine meatiness. Dark umami nuances balance black fruits over a reo straight wire frame with some surprising focus and cut. Not a slurppable, opulent monster and attempts to show Merlot’s opportunity to cut through foodstuffs with intent and purpose. At this price point, it’s made for burgers with bacon jam.
RRP: $21
Alc: 14%
Rating: 90/100
