Okay. So I’m a little bit of a fan of the self proclaimed curmudgeon Maynard James Keenan. Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Complex rhythms and structures with profound lyrics (even when smutty)…..Intelligencia meets The Uprising at uni, is besotted with polyphony and spawns overachieving offspring. Throw in some BJJ and a heap of wine and, well, it’s easy to see why I respect the man. Anyways, he’s going to be headlining Pinot Noir NZ along with a host of other incredibly talented people, including the Godmother: Jancis. So far, Mount Riley haven’t shown up on the attendees list…but they’ve got a year to sort that out.
Mount Riley, Pinot Noir, Marlborough 2014
A bit of animal funk, cherry, sweaty cardboard (not TCA) 5 spice, and savoury roast vegetables, Fruit sweet yet incredibly spicy with (relative) searing acidity. Lean cherry, just strawberry jam, citrus tang and and twisted tight on itself with fine tannins. It’s nervy and wound, I’m not sure how this will pop out the other side, but definitely give it air: “now stand back, and let me breathe!”
