A blend of older vines from their sites at Main Ridge, Red Hill, Merricks and Tuerong. All names synonymous with quality Australian Pinot Noir. So there I was, planning on pretty much having an Alcohol Free Week readying for the City2Surf run in Sydney….when I opened this to sample. Bloody delicious and proved to hard to resist a glass with dinner . Well done Simon Black and team.
Montalto Estate, Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula 2015
Rich and deep cherry, potent yet earthy rose, soft cinnamon and innate class. Spicy, yet muscular palate from the outset. There’s more than enough fruit at the front of the palate to grab the attention, before clove spice/pepper dominate, whilst the nuanced finale of pinot noir peacock tail dances and twirl into smoky tendrils. Tannins are spot on: the right amount of grip, the right amount of body to support immediate drinking or laying it down for a little while. Very bloody good.
