This Cava is made by Gabriel Suberviola in the Penedès region just outside Barcelona, Spain. Cava is Spain’s answer to Champagne and made in the same traditional way with fermentation in the bottle. The wine is aged 15 months on its lees (dead yeast cells left over from fermentation) for complexity. Often incredibly good value, try a Cava next time you’re looking for a bubbly aperitif.
Segura Viudas, Brut Reserva, Penedès, NV
Comprised of indigenous grapes: 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada and 15% Xarel-lo. Inviting nose of warm apple crumble, soft biscuit and citrus pith. The mousse crisp and the palate shows pear and green apple slices along with enough yeasty/salty complexity to lift it over many in the price point. Finishes fruit fresh and crunchy. Easy budget choice if you have to stock up for large gatherings in the silly season.
