Margaret River grows arguably the best Cabernet and Merlot grapes in Australia. No surprises then that they can blend them together at this quality at this price.
Flametree, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Margaret River 2014
Dark heart and purple edge in the glass. Like hug in a full length down coat, Throw in Malbec and Petit Verdot and get amplification of the fruit and dusty spectrum. Plums, fresh turned earth, warm coffee grounds, purple flowers, blackcurrant, cassis, builder’s pencil, black tea and leafy blackberry. It’s what you want from a blend: there’s all the required “old bull” fine sandy tannins from the Cabernet whilst the Merlot brings “young bull” rockstar fruit with the other two bringing along some thought provoking commentary, all dusty and purple. It’s comforting, it’s full and there’s balance. The oak brings a little bit of spice and fun without dominating. Great value.
