Yelland and Papps here have a “second take” here at Vermentino, rather than the bright traditional style they have with their other label. 231 days on skins before pressing. Wild ferment. Unfiltered. Unfined. Vegan friendly. Only 1000 bottles produced.
Yelland & Papps, Second Take, Vermentino, Barossa Valley, 2017
Slightly cloudy appearance with bright gold highlights. Takes a while to open up when in the glass. Salted jersey caramel over preserved lemon and lemon shortcake with a stalky, fibrous green tinge and plenty of ginger ale. Nutty, apple notes speak to the winemaking but don’t appear as faults. Energetic acidity drives the textured, complex, dry fruit with golden apples, grilled lemon and caramel creaminess. It’d be a fine matching with roast pork and crackling or as a shared aperitif bottle with a handfuls of pork scratchings.
