Okay, this one rivals some of the longer ‘dArenberg marques. Named in honour of Claymore Wines General Manager (Carissa Major) this is the 1st release of the Tempranillo. It celebrates the idea that “life is the best education one can possibly have.” A sibling release to the “Blackbird” Sangiovese, available online and cellar door only. 180 Dozen made. 15 Months maturation in old oak.
Claymore Wines, The Miseducation Of Carissa Major, Tempranillo, Clare Valley, 2016
Fruit aromas of cherry, plum and blackberry; herbaceous tones of fennel and bramble; savoury earthy elements of ink and eraser; to finish a little sweetness of Turkish Delight rosewater/choc. Straight lined palate: firm, tight with plummy purple fruit and roasted fennel, cushioned with a boysenberry ice cream roundness that is not unattractive. The fennel leaves a slightly medicinal aspect to the finish but would complement all manner of grilled tapa from the land or the sea.
