From the single vineyard collection by Polperro. The Mill Hill block is 270 metres above sea level, planted in 1994. The fruit gently pressed into barrel with full solids at ambient temperatures. Wild yeast fermentation, full malolactic fermentation. Minimal sulphur additions. After 12 months in oak, racked off gross lees into tank and another 6 months on fine lees. Bottled without fining or filtration. Bottled under Diam ‘cork.’
Polperro, Mill Hill, Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula 2016
Savoury, rich chardonnay aromas: baked golden apple, crème fraîche with a purity of frozen green grapes. The citrus lines run deep: preserved lemon, lime pith and all wrapped in swaddling cloth. A fuller chardonnay, the ‘hands off’ winemaking approach almost creates the illusion of complexity by artifice. Whilst at the big end of town, this is still quite a pure expression that is tightly bound with flaky pastry nuances. The finish with teeth cutting acidity is somewhat sharp for the moment, but will mellow and ultimately drive the wine forward.
