Dirt Candy Wine, The Prodigy, Semillon, Hunter Valley, 2020
Despite being bottled unfiltered, the colour still showing as pale lemon. Expected Hunter youth meets winemaking influences: Lemongrass and lemon pith meet apple flesh/juice, with some high toned estery elements, natural fennel frond. Nutty/creamy lees influence and talcy/powder. Palate presents a little tart, flabby and a product of the winemaking. I can understand the intention however, without the usual piercing precision of a young Hunter Semillon, it doesn’t have enough layers of intrigue to off-set missing fruit. Interestingly, the back label advice is to drink within 3 years.
