Yalumba are super blessed with access to oceans of great fruit. This one recall’s Wyndham Hill-Smith’s time in the 1930s, representing state and national cricket teams, including an Australian XI that boasted legendary players Don Bradman, Vic Richardson and Stan McCabe. 9 months French, Hungarian and American oak maturation. Winemaker is Mark van Halderen.
Yalumba, Wyndy’s Last Stand, Shiraz, Barossa, 2020
Spiced and fruity. Blackberry and blood plum with clove, coffee grounds, rope licorice and creamier mocha/vanilla oak influence. Mid to full weight with slick, shiny mid palate and a bright swathe of dark red/black fruits. Subtle, raspy tannin with lingering bitter coffee and mocha. No doubting the dependability from the house, the quality of fruit and the clean winemaking, just missing a little x-factor for higher points.
