Spring Timlin and Duncan Shouler are the winemakers for Squealing Pig, a New Zealand winery that sources grapes predominantly from the South Island. This Syrah comes from Hawke’s Bay in the North Island to grow their litter further. The winery doesn’t take itself too seriously (check their website) but they have been successful with gold medals for their Pinot Noir, Rose and Pinot Gris.
Squealing Pig, Syrah, Hawke’s Bay, 2015
Pungent Saxa white pepper dominates the nose, supplemented with fresh woody herbs, green capsicum, soft blue plums, meaty sheep shearing smells, cedary oak and rosewater. The palate fuller than the alcohol gives it credit for, fruit full on the front, before tapering to tart strawberry -like and gunsmoke after taste and finishing sinewy before fuzzy tannins complete the picture.
