Yalumba The Y Series Pinot Grigio 2017

Crazy kids at Yalumba with their new wave winemaking: wild ferment and left to mature on less until the final blending. Or could it be that one of Australia’s biggest family wineries are realising that you can have a sub $15 wine with intrigue and character? Heather Fraser is the winemaker.

Yalumba, The Y Series, Pinot Grigio, South Australia, 2017

A light gold colour, the minimal skin/juice contact and oxidative handling has reduced any of the potential colour taints. Opens with syrupy varietal pear, heavy laden blossoms and weighty rich ghee. Palate full with baked pear and apple slices, soft orange citrus and a little hint of cinnamon. Acidity bounces along playfully and respectfully to a medium length finish. Can be found much cheaper than the RRP for a perfect everyday wine.

RRP: $15
Alc: 12.5%
Rating: 16/20
