MATO is the shortened label name for Mataro of the Brash Higgins stable. Sourced from Brash’s neighbour: planted in the Lennon Vineyard with its “red mottled clay over limestone” geology. 50% whole bunch fermentation and then 17 months maturation in old French oak.
Brash Higgins, MATO, Mataro McLaren Vale, 2016
Bold and alluring this proffers glossy sweetness up front with black jelly beans, before crashing to earth with coffee, beef blood, wood shavings and ash. Blueberry and blackcurrant before a Turkish Delight, milk choc finish. Medium bodied, fine sand-paper tannins. A delicious baked orange / choc orange wickedness with a savoury, spiced edge. Tight and finely chiseled by unexpected acidity.
