Part of the re-branded ‘Organic’ series from d’Arenberg. The background of the name: Witches Berry is a weed that grows in the vineyards. Italian women once put the juice of the berry in their eyes which dilated their pupils, making them appear darker and more beautiful. As if Italian women needed to make themselves more beautiful……

d’Arenberg, The Witches Berry, Chardonnay, McLaren Vale, 2019
Light-Medium gold in the glass. Somewhat “old school” Chardonnay traits: yellow stonefruit, pear and tropical fruit notes, with savoury mealy elements, light barley sugar and a swirl of creamy meringue. Carrying a bit of depth and guts, with distinct “Vegemite” yeasty savoury spread, earthy roast turnip, some bittersweet grapefruit and yellow stonefruit. Finishing broad and with a little phenolic grip, it’s missing a vibrancy to elevate it higher. One for the bigger, old school style lovers.
