Winemaker Alex Head’s vineyard notes only scratch the surface of how substantial this wine is: “From Stonegarden, a 162 year old vineyard planted near Springton at 400m altitude in the coldest, driest and most remote part of the Eden Valley. The vines struggle to yield 1/2 tonne/acre on sandy loam over yellow clay and granite.”
Head Wines, The Ancestor Vine, Grenache, Eden Valley, 2019
Depth and profundity of raspberry, rose petals, bath powder, some meaty jus and tomato sugo richness with strap liquorice spice. Centimetre perfect. The supple, lithe flesh balanced with just the right amount of vanilla blonde oak giving a fine frame. Layers of fruit continue to roll and evolve in the glass with a delicious jubey texture and resplendently deep in flavour. Finishes long with a sense of authority and assurance.
