Stoney Rise reinvents Tassie’s Cellar Door future

In the north of lutruwita (Tasmania) on the kanamaluka (River Tamar), Stoney Rise has just opened the
Cellar Door of the future – part Cellar Door, part Bar, part Wine Store!

Owned and operated by the dynamic Joe and Lou Holyman, not only have they opened during a pandemic but they’ve gone against the cookie-cutter mould: Their architecturally designed building is part Cellar Door (with all their Stoney Rise estate wines, the esteemed Holyman range and you might also find renegade brand Brian), part Bar (including a stellar international wine list of German Rieslings French Burgundy, Chablis and Champagne) and part takeaway bottle-o!

“We wanted to surprise people with the fact it wasn’t just a run of the mill Cellar Door – only serving
our own wine. It’s really whatever you want it to be,” says owner and winemaker, Joe Holyman.
“We want visitors tasting our wines alongside some of our favourites from around the world. In that
sense, we’re welcoming you into your favourite new wine bar rather than expected Cellar Door.”

Designed by renowned local Tasmanian architects Cumulus Studio, the Cellar Door incorporates an
outdoor courtyard with open fire (an important feature 12 months a year in Tasmania), comfortable lawns overlooking the vineyard and “sophisticated, cosy” seating for the wine tasting.

To enjoy the wines, guests have a choice of 4 x 40ml pours of any of the eight wines on offer for $15; or a $25 flight tasting two wines alongside another Australian producer and an imported wine.

You’re also able to purchase “small share plates of all things delicious” which may feature their renowned homemade French onion dip alongside smallgoods from local producers (Robbins Island Wagyu Bresaola, Fork it Farm Terrines and Pork Pies, local organic greens and radishes) and overseas favourites like La Belle-iloise sardines from Brittany.

Open five days (Thursday through Monday) from 10am to 5pm, the Stoney Rise Cellar Door, Bar and Wine Store is just 25 minutes from Launceston and 40 minutes from the Launceston Airport at 96 Hendersons Lane, Gravelly Beach.
