Winemakers Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and Theo Engela have now been joined by young gun winemaker Huon Fechner (yes, same surname as the source of a lot of CB’s aromatic fruit). Love the labelling on these “PUNKT” wines and this one translates to “The Aromatic Point.” Made from Riesling, Gewürztraminer and the uncommon Kerner (Weisser Herold) from the Fechner Vineyard. Described as “One Vineyard. Three Germanic Luminaries. One Aromatic Explosion.” Co-fermented and bottled un-fined.
Chaffey Bros. Wine Co., DÜFTE PUNKT, Eden Valley, 2020
Big hit of lime juice and fruit, pink rock salt, poached pear, grapefruit, mango chutney, rosewater and Turkish Delight “dust.” With weight and viscosity and dry spice from the Gewurz (and a touch of the Kerner) and thrust from the Riesling. Fleshier than one expects and a far drier experience than the nose suggests, there’s just a little phenolic textural chew that provides versatility. Continues the signature label saline, quinine-esque and grapefruit bittersweet finish. Unique and worthy.
