Burton McMahon is the winemaking duo of Matt Burton (Gundog Estate, Hunter Valley, NSW) and Dylan McMahon (Seville Estate, Yarra Valley, Victoria). With Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from individual vineyards, these are fine experiments in winemaking. The Syme on Yarra Vineyard is grown on the red volcanic soils of Seville and planted to the MV6 clone. Note, bottle image is of 2018 but nought else has changed.
Burton McMahon, Syme On Yarra Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Yarra Valley, 2020
Perfumed and complex. Crunchy cherry and cranberry with rose petal velvet, hints of smoky charcuterie, ground nutmeg spice and a cool stoniness. The palate is silky and lithe: Medium bodied with vibrant red fruits and elegant, fine tannins bolstered by sympathetic oak and a very good tail of structure over pure fruit. This label is proving to be a keenly balanced and consistent release.
