Brokenwood have announced that they’ve taken custodianship of the Oakey Creek Vineyard from the original owners, the Draytons. Originally planted in 1982 (the vineyard’s composition is a combination of free draining alluvial over clay soil with a gentle east facing rise), it has seen subsequent plantings in 1984, 1986 and 1989 and has been a source of fruit for many top Hunter producers, not only Brokenwood (the vineyard accounts for around 25% of their Semillon fruit and goes into their top marques, including the ILR Reserve Semillon and this single vineyard release).
Senior Winemaker Stuart Hordern says “While we’ve always had a great working relationship with the Drayton family, ownership ensures greater control and ability to adapt our viticulture to suit the site. This is also a statement of Brokenwood’s confidence in the bright future of our region and the world-class nature of the Hunter Valley.”
The current release at time of writing is the 2017, and the 2019 will be released in November 2022 (exclusive to Brokenwood’s Single Vineyard Members).
Brokenwood, Oakey Creek Vineyard, Semillon, Hunter Valley, 2019
Soft lemon clear hue with those vibrant green highlights. Exotic and fresh aromas of lemongrass stalk, lemon pith, light melon, beeswax and an ever so slight mealy character that will develop into the signature Hunter toastiness. Impeccable balance and finesse wrought through the palate. Coiled tight, it feels like it’s holding its breath and will take a long time to exhale. Exceptional.
