There’s only a handful of producers of WA that I would select for Pinot Noir. Rob Diletti at Castle Rock Estate is definitely one of them. This is Castle Rock Estate’s new flagship Pinot Noir, named in honour of the founders Angelo and Wendy Diletti. Unfortunately, the website states that this is now sold out for the general public, so if you see it on a shelf or a list, buy without hesitation.
Castle Rock Estate, a&w, Pinot Noir, Porongurup, 2021
Medium-clear garnet in colour. Aromatic whole bunch prominent punching out forest floor “pinosity” with dark cherry, strawberry compote and dried cranberries. Herbal edges with warm rhubarb, sage and thyme leaves, emboldened by a dark yeasty concentrate. Silky tannins make the elegant palate flow and glide. Berry amalgam that feels brooding, yet finishes delicious: all chary and dark with choc/orange echoes.
RRP: $52
Alc: 13.5%
Rating: 18.75/20 (95/100)
