DR3 x St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

No longer simply a rebranded “St Hugo.” This is the 3rd release of this joint label from Australian Formula 1 racing car driver Daniel Ricciardo and the St Hugo team headed up by Peter Munro. All the big bottles are also available (1.5L Magnums, 3L Double Magnums and 6L Methuselahs), along with add on accessories like embossed Riedel glassware, Le Creuset bottle openers (as it has a bloody bit of tree bark stuffed in the top), coasters and a velvety looking lounge robe (nope, didn’t know I needed one, either).

While the label says “South Australia” you can guess safely there’s a lot of Coonawarra in here, probably more than a bit of Wrattonbully and possibly a smidge of Barossa. Oak maturation for 18 months (45% new French oak and 55% older French oak…a welcome change from previous releases with American oak).

St Hugo, DR3, Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia, 2021

Cassis heart, crushed bay leaf, bright raspberry, hints of “mint slice,” fresh campfire ash, baked blueberry and pastille for youthful joy. A little rustic in approach: Oak spice cuts through dark and savoury black fruits. Cabernet Sauvignon does its thing and gives  a void where expectance desires flesh while drying, chalky tannins make it feel very primary. No denying fruit quality but it is going to need a few more laps of the track to shine.

Alc: 14%
Rating: 18/20 (92/100)
