Babich wines are celebrating their centenary and releasing 100 years of stories on their website like a giant advent calendar. Well worth a visit to read a bit this pioneering New Zealand wine family. They’ve a large range and this comes from their certified Organic Headwaters Vineyard.
Babich Family Estates, “Headwaters Vineyard” Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, 2014
Not your usual Marlborough Savvy. A nose of crisp, light tropical and pineapple fruits laid over egg shell and meringue. A little funky with big hits of green capsicum, and some earthy blackcurrant leaf. Flavours hit the lime citrus spectrum, cutting through capsicum and straw. This leans well into that green spectrum without being under ripe. Uber tart with acidity driving through to a long finish and gets your mouth puckering.
Babich Family Estates, “Headwaters Vineyard” Chardonnay, Marlborough, 2014
A light pale gold in the glass. Smells a little older and mature than it is. Melon fruit over jasmine flower blossom, sandal wood, tinned peaches, mandarin citrus and barley sugar. Ripe tropical fruit alongside that barley sugar sweetness. A good lick of oak nuttiness, but finishes tight with more of that melon, green and grapefruit citrus. I’m really not sure on this one…the Sauv Blanc is the pick of the 2.
