Bernard Schurr, Montagne, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint Emilion, 2016
From an average vien age of 35 years, this throws up plenty of plum, mulberry and blackberry on the nose over sweet boysenberry ice cream offset by smoky, toasty oak and varietal pencil shavings. Some rustic roasting pan jus for good measure. Midweight. Dusty, chewy and chalky pervading tannins all at the same time. Smoky, slightly leafy herbaceous notes and pippy black currant. A distinctly wooden aspect to an otherwise tart finish. Varietal, if not very exciting.
