Sourced from the Forest Edge vineyard, planted 1998 on the high slopes of Mount Canobolas in Orange, 3 hours west of Sydney. No 2018 was released due to a devastating fire near the vineyard. The wine was whole bunch pressed (stalks and stems), fermented with wild yeast in 35% new French oak and the rest older French.
Brokenwood, Forest Edge Vineyard, Chardonnay, Orange, 2019
Very pale, almost silver colour in the glass. Zesty mandarin and grapefruit pith with more nuanced stone fruit and pear, while the savoury elements from the wine making affirm themselves: sandalwood, light oak, struck match and nougat. Tight and restrained palate while the obvious underlying power and length can’t be ignored. Textural, dry and offering effortless weight with expertly handled, harmonious fruit and oak balance. A superb Chardonnay.
