This is the 9th release of the collaboration by Dylan McMahon of Seville Estate in the Yarra Valley and Matt Burton of Gundog Estate. The boys say that 2020 was a “tricky, lower yielding” season but one that still managed to produce “high quality wines.” The fruit for this was harvested on March 1st, being the first picked out of the range. George’s vineyard is in Seville East and located around 180 metres above sea level. Bottle image is of 2018, but nought else is different.
Burton McMahon, George’s Vineyard, Chardonnay, Yarra Valley, 2020
Bright, yet pale straw yellow colour. Fresh dinner roll bready complexity with grated chocolate, potent citrus and ground meal. A little egg shell, nectarine and green papaya in the mix too. Tight and coiled, nearly highly strung. Puckering intensity that grips, digs its fingernails in and won’t let go. Long, persistence through the finish with just enough chalky phenolics.
