Yalumba have done more to champion Viognier in Australia more than any other winemaker. The “red drinker’s white” does it somewhat of a disservice: whilst it can be powerful, it can still maintain crispness and cleanliness as any white wine. Yalumba ensure that this entry level is used as a gateway to their more complex, profound wines such as The Virgilius. As with the others in the Y Series, wild fermentation and vegan “friendly.”
Yalumba, The Y Series, Viognier, South Australia, 2019
Light, pale gold with almost green highlights. Deeply aromatic: apricot kernel, lime marmalade, finger lime, honeysuckle blossom, brown spice and even some flinty, mineral elements. A good amount of depth and richness to the palate with creamed honey, earthy chocolate figs and slippery apricot halves all hemmed in neatly with fine linear elements to keep it clean. The pick of the Y Series.
