Winemaker Jo Nash has been at McPherson Wines (based in Nagambie, central Victoria) since 2012 and responsible for creating successes for some of the bigger Australian supermarkets’ (including Aldi) home brand wines. Not to be outdone, McPherson under Jo have won plenty of accolades for themselves: the 2015 of this wine won the best red blend at the Victorian Wine Show. Blend is 95% Shiraz and the Mourvedre 5%.
McPherson Wine Company, MWC, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Victoria, 2018
I really like the herbal notes at play from the Mourvedre here. Liquorice, dark berries, turned earth, spent coffee grounds, some meaty depth, oak spice but with a just-picked herb freshness that delivers a spice overlay to subtle and focused fruit. Good use of oak, (if still a little raw for the moment), varietal pepper and piquant spice dusting through drying, spreading tannin. Even, balanced and well put together.
