A blend from across the Barossa, with the Grenache components from four different vineyards, ranging from 25 and 76 years old; the Shiraz from cooler Eden Valley sites and the Mataro from a dry grown vineyard on Mengler’s Hill, s-w corner of Eden Valley. 50% Grenache, 30% Mataro, 20% Shiraz. All varieties fermented separately before final blending.
Head Wines, Head Red, GSM, Barossa, 2019
Offering plenty of cool red fruit with fragrant herbal action, a little bit of meaty funk and a line of crushed red brick dust. A bit more grunt (structure and body) than some GSM blends without forsaking elegance. Waxy, puckering tannins coating a palate that shows good harmony to the blend. A sharp tang of nettle-y amaro herbs, lingering mocha and tail flick of acidity to lift the finish. A wonderful sum of all parts.
