Carillion Wines are part of the greater stable of the Davis Family Vineyards (including Pepper Tree and Briar Ridge). Part of their Originals Series, this comes from South Australia’s old dirt of Wrattonbully, the Stonefields vineyard to be precise. Made by Andrew Ling.
Carillion Wines, Block 22, Cabernet Sauvignon, Wrattonbully, 2018
Medium deep garnet in colour. Full of brambly crushed blackberry leaf, cassis, light pencilly wood, hazelnut choc with the herbal aspects leading to sorrel and menthol with turned earth and diary leather. Medium-full in the mod Australian Cabernet style, There’s some yeasty darkness underpinning choc and cassis with plenty of herbal influence. A touch contrived through the finish, there’s almost a miserly tightness to the close, near on abrupt….nay, curt. Tannins are fine and firm. I think a short space of time in the cellar will be beneficial.
